Transported back home....

A few weeks ago, the video below surfaced on social media sites and immediately I watched to see the sights of our islands up North. It made me miss Shetland so much, especially because the film managed to catch Shetland on some lovely days. It's crazy how much the weather can transform a place.

As part of my collection I have been creating garments that revolve around the idea of being protected from the elements during the winter, and sometimes summer months here.
Being battered from all directions of storm force wind, rain, hail....whatever else you want to add in, it is far from warm, and as well as needing waterproof clothing, warmth and layering is key.

Shetland wool is a great sustainable, local resource and I have been using yarn from the Lerwick wool brokers: Jamieson and Smith in my collections for the last couple of years. It weaves beautifully and creates a great cloth for outerwear. Not only is Shetland wool important for me to use because it is local, it is sourced from over 800 local crofters which helps to support them too, and it is all hand graded. This for me means that I know I am getting a top quality yarn, from my home.

As I am right in the middle of developing my sample collection at the moment, there are more images to come of my recent woven samples. It is an exciting time!

I have been busy weaving in the workshop this week producing first sample ideas for the collection.
Here's a sneaky look at what I've been up to, as well as some things that have been influencing me throughout the first weeks back after a lovely Christmas and New Year spent at home in Shetland and Edinburgh.

As I start to think about colour, yarns and weaving, we are busy looking at silhouettes and shapes for our toiles and beginning the initial stages of garment construction. It's all go here at the moment as Christmas approaches.

Shetland Summer...July/August 2014

I have been back in Shetland for about five weeks now which has been so nice, especially since I managed to get a job for a month working at a local visitor attraction.
Said job has been great so far, getting to spend most of the day outside, until last week Shetland decided to jump from Summer straight to Winter and I have found myself standing in the torrential rain and horizontal wind more than I'd have liked too...anyway, working outside has meant I have been able to soak up my surroundings and I have taken so many pictures, so I thought I would share some....

These photographs will be used as part of my inspiration for my next sample collection as, from September, I am heading south again, this time to Glasgow to do my Masters in Fashion and Textiles at Glasgow School of Art, which I am really looking forward to! It should be a good year.
